About Ruapehu Homestead
Our story
Coming from a background in education, owners Don and Sue were motivated to give visitors to the Ruapehu region a chance to experience adventure in the outdoors. So in 1986, in response to the recently opened Turoa ski field, they invited visitors to see the countryside from the back of a horse.
In 1986 Mt Ruapehu erupted and in 2008 a fire destroyed most of the Ruapehu Homestead’s iconic buildings. Nether of these two significant incidences stood in the way of visitors continuing to enjoy the great outdoors through our horse trekking.
Each year growing numbers of visitors continue to ride the Ruapehu Homestead horses, many returning to share this experience with friends and family.
